Mental Illness

In the wake of Robin Williams' death, I was asked if we could run a prompt on mental illness. Without hesitation, I agreed.

It is something I struggle with, something people I love struggle with, something many more people than we realize struggle with.

This picture, one that captures, in the most personally terrifying way for me, post partum depression.

After my younger daughter was born, my head was filled with intrusive thoughts. My mind was working overtime, conjuring up images to show me, telling me all the possible ways I could harm her.

The most recurrent was a vision of dropping her down the stairs.

It took me over twenty minutes to work up the courage to take this picture.

Hi there everyone! Looks like we are back to the weekly prompts.

For this week, take a picture of something "before".

This picture is of my oldest, as we walked in the office to have his braces put on.

Find something beautiful and share it! This is the last weekly prompt, the 30 day challenge starts June 1st!

This is a picture of Little Boy, not feeling well. Normally this wouldn't be something to be relieved about, but for him it is.  He has stress induced hyperglycemia and is being watched for possible Type 1 diabetes.

He was running high all week and we were worried. Until he woke up coughing this morning.

Diabetes.  It'll mess with your head you guys.

I took this picture just hours before we had to say goodbye to our dog, Jake.

This part never gets easier.

This week is all about showing something from the past. Your past, history, anything.

These are dinosaur tracks left in stone just south of where we live. Seeing something several million years old does wonders for your perspective.  I highly recommend it.

For whatever reason these resonated more with me than fossilized skeletons ever do. Maybe because they've been left there all this time, in the same place.

My boys have always been obsessed with mustaches. While The Oldest is actually shaving these days, Little Boy is living in fantasy land a little bit.
Take a picture of fantasy and share it this week!

This is another one of my favorite topics because it can be interpreted so many different ways. Perspective, the way I generally use it, is shooting a picture from an angle or view we wouldn't normally see. Here, Little Boy admires his spiky hair before school.

This is one of my favorite topics and you'll see it reappear from time to time. It's on all the 30 day challenges as well.

Light is the single most important element of photography. Find it, train your eye to seek it out, use it, manipulate it, rely on it.

I'm lucky enough to live in a place where things like this happen fairly regularly.

Friday, March 21, 2014

Take a picture of something that frustrates you. I have done battle with this train more times than I could ever begin to tell you. It's just a thing here locally...if you're late, just blame the train. You will immediately be forgiven because everyone understands.

It always comes when I am already running late or have somewhere to be.

Having a little boy in the backseat who begs for the windows down so he can hear it makes up for it, though.

Funny how the things in life that frustrate us grown ups are often the most fun for kids.

Show me something that is a part of who you are, where you come from, the story of your family.

I am approximately half Irish. My husband gave me this Claddagh ring on my birthday about 10 years ago now. I love, love, love it.

This one is simple enough,  but there are so many possibilities!  Find something with an interesting texture and get a tight shot of it.

This one is a closeup of completely ordinary denim, with whiskering and fading.

My little girl made a big change today. Show me a change in your life!

Black & White

Black and white photography is some of my favorite because it forces our eyes to strip away all the noise from the image and focus on it alone.

Our hands, with the new rings we got this last year.

Saturday, February 8, 2014

I was going to make this a black and white week, but then I saw these icicles hanging from the tree in my front yard.

Weather. In motion. In stillness. What it is, what it creates. Share it.

Tuesday, February 4, 2014

Hi. I'm behind this week. Sorry about that. This topic came in as a suggestion. Due to the weather, I'm having to recycle an old picture, but one that I love.

I made the rainbow Jello for a Wizard of Oz birthday party a few years ago. If you want to try it, here is the recipe.

Sunday, January 26, 2014

I've been so busy being sick and writing lately that I haven't been out taking many pictures.

My bad. I just dyed my hair today and took this picture, and...like usual...my eyes stand out more than the hair I was trying to take the picture of.

I do love my eyes. We should all have something we love about ourselves physically, I think.

Take a picture of something blue this week and share it!

Friday, January 17, 2014

It's been a long week, you guys.

I needed a glass of wine last night.

Shhh. It fits.

What helps keep you sane?

Friday, January 10, 2014

Forgive me, I am relying on an old picture for this one. I've been cooped up with sick kids all week, so I'm not getting many chances to take pictures.

This was one of the prompts on the list we put together last year, and it's one of my favorite things to try and take pictures of. Turn off your flash and let the light of the flames do all the work.

This one might be a little tough, considering the current weather situation around the country, but you can always just go the way I did.

I love football, and three of my four teams are playing today.

This is the shirt that won.

And the lighting is weird today.

That is all.
